Subject: Find Your Latitude and Longitude
From: Tom Heisey Perhaps this is the easiest way to get accurate longitude and latitude down to several arc-seconds, thanks to Microsoft's TerraServer. Accurate location is especially important if you're attempting to observe satellites with tracking or to observe occultations with narrow foot prints. It's pretty simple, but can be tedious if your site is in the middle of nowhere: 1) Go to the TerraServer: and search for the nearest town. (They often include very small towns in the database, but you'll have better luck using towns of 1,000 or more.) 2) Once you find the nearest town, pan and zoom the image to landmarks or "drive" the roads to your site. Clicking on the photo pans and zooms the image. Clicking on the arrows at the sides of the image pans the image without zooming. Click on the zoom scale to change the resolution without panning. 3) Once you've found your site, zoom to the highest resolution - usually 1 square meter per pixel. This is surprisingly high resolution and you'll be able to recognize relatively small features. 4) After getting the view centered, select "Image Info" in the blue menu bar. This brings up another page that lists various information, including a grid with the latitude and longitude in arc seconds! Subject: Worldwide Longitude and Latitude URL
